What a society we are
in, which is largely tribal and parochial in nature. Thus, any form of
participation in public life is not on the interest of the society at large,
but on personal, family clan or tribal interests. The government is therefore
marked by unchecked corruption, nepotism, mal-administration and fiscal
dishonesty.
Nigeria, however, is a
democratic country, characterized by the presence of many political parties.
Democracy is the rule by the people, in other words, the process by which the
citizens perform their right through their representatives. Democracy, however,
is the most popular form of government in the world today.
As opined by some
political scientists; democracy is a menace to Nigeria political stability.
However, one is likely to concur with them, due to the fact that the Nigeria
democratic system have being hijacked by politicians that have no interest of
the nation at heart and have made government a source of income for themselves.
Thus, Nigeria politicians are fraudsters, looters and criminals.
Political parties in
Nigeria represent only the interests of their parties, mergers or coalitions
and not the people.
According to Muammar
Qadhdhafi, “The only difference between
tribe and a political party is that of blood ties”. Otherwise they are both
made up of people having common beliefs and interests. Most politicians join a
political party or action group not to serve the people but to achieve their
own personal interests.
In addition, the
strength of any political party in Nigeria is its ability to subvert the plans,
achievements of its major rival or opponent and to expose to the world it rival
negativity, and thus gain political power for itself. While other minor
political parties act as pigeon and adopts any of the major political party,
merger or coalition in power.
We’ve lived with this for too long, since we abandoned politics to thugs and often unqualified individuals, saying politics is a dirty game for bad boys and now we are reaping the rewards of neglecting our national affairs to be managed by hoodlums.
But it is we, the
citizenry, who are guilty of neglecting our duties. We worshiped politicians
for some share of the national cake. We celebrate and award them with prestigious
awards.
It
is time to reclaim our country from the political fraudsters.
If we are to achieve a just society that will bring about political stability
and economic development, then we must come together to participate in
attaining this goal.
“For selfless leadership to achieve at the top, the citizenry must shun evil and embrace good acts and actively participate in politics for better representation” -Dan Aluta
