Wisdom is really difficult to possess. And a wise one did not lift his or her own head in the forest. God gave us the head to think through it.
Let me look into this matter strictly in the light of The Holy Bible, because I believe that what transpired which brought about this annual ritual of the celebration of love is misunderstood by many.
Flashing back to my Christianity root, the evergreen era, the little stupendous water of knowledge of The Holy Bible with which the priest bathe my intellect enabled me to remember something, a story, which came to my mind. And I recalled the classical story which Jesus Christ himself told in response to a lawyer's question, when the latter asked him,"Who is my neighbour?" That story is the story of The Good Samaritan, from which I elicited my belief in humanism as my own philosophy in life-- a philosophy that teaches me to pay attention to human conditions than any 'isms' and 'religions', and to be good to anyone irrespective of religion or region, tongue or tribe. Therein lies 'real' worship of God. Every religion teaches this concept of humanism.
The story of The Good Samaritan in the book of Luke chapter 10:27 [I stand to be corrected], is the real pragmatic definition of love. The story is a didactic story of a certain man who was travelling, or going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and along the way fell among thieves. The thieves stripped him of everything he had and beat him, and absconded, leaving the traveller "half dead," according to the Bible.
A priest (take note, a priest for that matter) who was going down that same way found the nearly dead man on the way and passed by without showing any concern; then a Levite did the same thing, then came the Good Samaritan who stopped by and walked up to the dying man beside the road, picked him up and took him to the hospital, paid all the medical bills including extra amount for his upkeeping and then went away.
One interesting thing about the story is that the Samaritans and Jews despised themselves and would not do anything together. And that dying man was a Jew for that matter! Can one imagine that? And, also, let us imagine the character of a priest, a so-called 'man of God' whom the priest symbolises and the Levite symbolising most 'ordinary' people who could be lackadaisical and wicked. For those of us who are quite familiar with this story, what did Jesus Christ say? He(Jesus) asked the lawyer:"Who is the neighbour of that man?" The question did not demand for any answer. Then Jesus told the lawyer, "Go and do likewise."
The above story, told so brief by me, is what "LOVE" is all about. And that is what we must do in order to live, not what we see here, which is the "good" line of reasoning of the "New School". Love isn't to throw immoral parties and get drunk and even to sleep outside with free women.
As a matter of fact, such a childish way of reasoning or thinking can and will lead you to a disastrous end. Take heed now. Love is more than what most of us think, which is very shallow. Let us do like the Samaritan because that is what we must do in order to live.
A little gift or help or assistance in any way shows love. That little act of kindness may make someone out there to smile forever. Love is to show kindness or mercy, to alleviate sufferings and pains solely to please God, and for his sake.
