Ethics
and morality are the pillars for stability in any society and they are the
basis for law and order and consequently security of either a community or a
nation.
Ethics and morality are derived from spiritual books and societal norms determined by history, elder statesmen and sometimes even established authority, and it is within these confines that we as human beings should behave and conduct our daily lives so that we can all live in peace and stability.
Morality
is the beliefs of the individual or group as to what is wrong or wrong, that is
the principle of right and wrong. Ethics on the other hand principles set by
group e.g. Nigerians Union of Journalists and are response to a specific
situation e.g. it is unethical for journalists to receive brown envelop. So in
the event of a collection of brown envelop by a journalist, ethics will respond
to that.
Differences between the two with
examples:
Respect:
It is moral for human being to
respect others; you are expected to respect people who are older than you in
speech, regards and even approach. For example, in journalistic profession, you
must have respect for people’s rights, dignity and you are not allowed to
invade into other people’s privacy. Which if you do, and you may face legal
implications.
Honesty:
You are morally required to be
honest at all situations and it is at your own discrepancies to be, i.e. you
may not really be punished for telling lies. This is not the same as in the
case of journalistic profession where you are ethically expected to be objective
i.e. reports things as they are; you are not entitled to your own prejudice in
news reporting.
