Senate Vs Magu; A Contradiction of Governmental Interest and National Interest, By Adeagbo Hammed

In any serious nation, the foremost interest of the nation lies in its survival. At the same time, those development oriented leaders of serious nations appreciate the national interest as the key used in applying value judgments to the realities of political plans and actions.

Yet, policies regarding internal and international dealings in such a nation are distinctively defined in such a way that distinguish the relationship manifested between national interests, will of the ruler, dynastic interest, and the government interest.

Without mincing words, the hypocritical attitude and the idiosyncratic mentality of Nigerian leaders have compromised the understanding of these concepts and therefore, left Nigerians in tattered and polarized minds.

A contextual evaluation of whether the 8th national assembly under the leadership of Dr. Bukola Saraki represents the interest of the people of Nigeria as whole or its narrow and limited self interest would enhance the understanding of this contradiction.

The action and in-action of the 8th national assembly, since the inception to the moment, are more of self-centered. The case of Ibrahim Magu versus National Assembly is one out many glaring examples of the national interests that contradict the will of our lawmakers.

The fact remains that our leaders are multitalented in corruption. They can do and undo to maneuver their ways when it comes to looting. Little wonder why we were being portrait as “fantastically corrupt nation”. People like Saraki and his cabals will always ensure, at all cost, their interests prevail.

Obviously, the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, is more or less a bad omen that could pave way for them to be jailed. Dino Melaye got the whole picture when he claimed “we (all Nigerians) were fighting corruption together before you (Ibrahim Magu) came to this house (National Assembly) and turned against us (Senates)”.

However, despite the sponsored SSS document against him, it is evident enough that Ibrahim Magu is unquestionably competent, suitable and the perfect choice for the EFCC chairmanship. Under his watch, the unprecedented records have being achieved. Some of our looted monies have not just being exposed, but equally being recovered.

The truth of it is that police and thieves are never friends; solders and terrorists will always be enemies; NDLEA will always go after the drug traffickers, eradicate cannabis by destroying plantings. The NDLEA will also always target "the leaders of narcotics and money laundering organizations"; custom will always be mindful of the importation and exportation and will always remain an anti-smuggling agency; and as well, EFCC and corrupt politicians and individuals will never be in agreement and we know what that means to our law makers.
