AWAKENING
OUR HUMANITY by Kabiru Yusuf Ado
Sir
Ahmadu Bello once said “We are people of many different races, tribes and
religions, who are knit together by common history, common interests and common
ideals. Our diversity may be great but the things that unite us are stronger
than the things that divide us”.
Using the aforementioned quotation one can
understand that of course we differ in perspectives and sometimes we have
converged views of social life but the point is there will never come a day
when human beings will be free of divergence.
Humanity can be defined as quality of being benevolent;
the peculiar nature of man, by which he is distinguished from other beings but
it is obvious today in Nigeria that humanity is regressing. Whatever steps we
take forward, they take us back as human beings.
Our Humanity is challenged by us in one way or the
order. According to a communication scholar Professor Umar Pate "Hardly is
there any part of the country that is totally immune from one form of challenge
or another. For example while Insurgency and Terrorism has bedeviled the North-East,
the North-Central has been engulfed with Ethnic Tension and Cattle Rustling and
Elements of Religious Fundamentalism. The Problem of the South-West is largely
that of armed robbery, area boys' phenomena and kidnappings. In the South-East,
they are battling with armed robbery and kidnappings too, while for the South-South,
the problems are those of robberies, kidnappings and vandalism.
Honestly, I struggled to understand why we cannot
live with each other in Peace and love. The trail of death and violence is so
shockingly unimaginable, from the murder of sleeping in their homes, to
reprisal mass extermination of innocent people, to the rampage of rape, to the
menace of Boko Haram, to the Fulani herdsmen tension etc.
There is no doubt, our
society has completely lost its humanity and that loss happened at the moment
we stop fighting for each other and started fighting each other.
There are so many reasons to cling to no matter the displeasures,
for the sake of peace, for the sake of others, for the sake of humanity and
above all else for the sake of God.
In United Nations World Humanitarian Day 2016: The Award
Winning Novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said “Let us tell a different story;
let us remember that the movement of Human being on earth is not new. Human
history is a history of movement mingling. Let us remember that we are not just
bones and flesh but we are emotional beings. We all share a desire to be
valued, a desire to matter. Let us remember that dignity is as important as
Food”. So we have to understand that if eating and having fun is only what we
are born to do then we should keep one thing in mind; Even Animals can do such
activity; If God has made us humans and the most important creature there has
to be something behind it.
One of the most outstanding examples of
extraordinary Humanity in a human being has been portrayed by Mother Theresa
"Humanity means helping others at times when they need that help the most,
Humanity means forgetting your selfish interest at times when others need your
help."
Only Human beings can understand the importance of
humanity and it is humanity as a result of intelligence which actually gives
the core essence of human existence.
The Indian Writer Kirti Daga says, "It is
important to understand one important fact; an individual's life is successful
not by the number of degree he or she attains but by the degree of Humanitarian
activities that individual is into on a day to day basis."
Let's help each other and save the future of our
humanity, serving the poor and the disabled is one of the greatest humanitarian
help an individual can provide in his or her lifetime.
It is essential to understand the fact that we are
extremely lucky to have everything we desire at any point of the time we need.
Serving the needy means that you yourself think that you have more than enough
resources to your disposal.
To this end I will say that as soon as we understand
the importance of Humanity on a day to day life, the purpose of which we are on
earth is automatically fulfilled.
